Sigmund Freudenberger was a painter, engraver and etcher. With excellent knowledge of the works of the French painters François Boucher and Jean-Baptiste Greuze, he created numerous genre paintings and scenes from Bernese country life as well as portraits.

Freudenberger created numerous rural genre scenes, which he first executed in pen and ink, brush and watercolor and then transferred to etchings in a second step. In a final step, the latter were colored with watercolours.
